An alleged new Banksy has appeared on the Historic Moore Street site in Dublin, depicting 1916 Irish Rebel Leader Padraig Pearse surrendering to unidentified Property Developers.
The historic location – a terraced row of Georgian buildings, where the Irish rebels of 1916 retreated to and eventually surrendered at – has recently been approved for redevelopment works. The development of a new Shopping Quarter on the site has caused controversy and a growing movement want the buildings to be protected to preserve their historic value.
2016 marks the centenary of the 1916 Easter Rising, an event which eventually led to the end of British Rule and the declaration of an Irish Republic.
Demolition works have recently been suspended following a planning review.
