Soccer Writers’ Association of Ireland

In existence since 1961, the Soccer Writers’ Association of Ireland (SWAI) is an organisation which represents and caters for soccer journalists working in the Republic of Ireland across all media platforms.

The SWAI seek to promote Irish Football at all levels from Junior to National Team and recognise outstanding performance and effort within Irish Football with highly prestigious annual awards.

The brief
As an association of journalists and media workers, the SWAI needed to develop a contemporary web presence to keep-up with the pace of change within their own industry.

‘Soccer Writing’ was formerly an exclusive stronghold of print media, which now has to compete and live alongside non-print media such as dedicated football websites, blogs and apps.

Actions / Challenges
The SWAI required a full branding and web development exercise – identity, logo & website.

Having canvassed members for opinion the consensus was that the new logo design should include an old-style football, a quill, a ribbon-style banner and text title.

The new SWAI website needed to easily accommodate regularly published content. This required a Content Management System which could easily be updated by non-technical users.

The SWAI also wanted to recognize outstanding contribution to Irish football with dedicated sections of the website.

Logo and identity work were provided in accordance with client requirements and a new website was delivered on-time and on-budget. See

“Having spoken to a couple of website design companies, we, as the Soccer Writers’ Association of Ireland, didn’t quite feel that they understood our vision for a new site. Simon did and there was an instant chemistry. That ensured the entire process was one where both parties were almost synced into same target, in terms of design, navigation and how to use it behind the scenes.
The great thing about Simon is that he knows how to take your ideas and not only put them onto the page, but to improve them in a way that you never even considered. A good designer should be creative, but a great designer takes it to the next level and that is where Simon is at.
The SWAI are extremely pleased with our final site and the feedback has been hugely positive. However, we feel that this is just the beginning of our relationship with Simon as we hope to keep that slick, fresh look updated and remain open to any ideas that he has for future upgrades” Gareth Maher – Secretary, SWAI
